Multi-tasking already...sucking her thumb and...praying?

First bite

Second bite -- what IS this stuff and why haven't I had it before?

SO tired!

I wish I could say she's just crying for more cake & ice cream...
But after:
a morning at the playground
3 hours of freeway driving
only 20 minutes of naptime
another 2 hours running errands
presents, cake & ice cream
--
not even another piece of cake would solve this! She was SO happy to see her bed.

This weekend the girls and I drove down to Junction to visit Grandma, Grandpa & Buddy and on to Cedar City to visit Rachel and my beautiful new niece - Savanna.

Having had a baby sister of their own born just last summer, Autumn & Heidi seemed more excited about Buddy than their new cousin...but Esther and I sure enjoyed Savanna in all her tininess! (Is that a word?)

Pictures with Grandma & Grandpa

Grandma & Grandpa have new neighbors with an eight-year old girl, Emily. Autumn had so much fun playing with her that I couldn't bear to interrupt for pictures. Next time.

Shaking Our Legs Before the Drive Home

These were bittersweet visits for me. I never thought I'd live in Utah as long as I have and now I find myself sad to be leaving. I'm saddest to be leaving family and friends I've been able to live close to and visit often. Thank goodness for technology that keeps us connected even when we can't visit! SUCH a blessing.

This morning I packed up my files and hopefully got all the important papers and info that should travel with me. I'm surprised at the amount of papers I found that were trash! I did come across some gems though, definitely worth saving. These are some pictures Autumn has drawn at home over the past few months as well as a letter she "dictated" in preschool (since as you can easily see, that's not her handwriting...).

I asked Autumn today where Esther was and she said maybe Esther wasn't here yet when she drew the picture or that maybe Esther was sleeping when she drew the picture. ;)

FIVE is a big deal to Autumn and she talks to us a lot about things she remembers doing and a typical ending to her stories is - "but that was when I was four."

She just informed me that the letter is in fact a band-aid. I'm discovering that there's an art to talking to your kid about their day! Not really an art I guess but more of a consciousness from me to dig a little further when I ask about her day. I had assumed this was a letter...it must be from their "Doctor" or "Health" week.

Autumn had her last day of preschool Tuesday. I went to class with her on Tuesday and the teachers gave us an envelope full of pictures they'd taken throughout the year. It's been a great year for her. She is my social butterfly (where does that phrase come from?) and loved her teachers, her classmates, and preschool in general. She rode the bus to and from school most mornings and loved that too! She was very popular in her class. I know...can I really say that? I'm not really very objective being her mother...but one day I took her to class and the whole class ran to her as she came in the door. They were so happy to see her! She just smiled and took it in stride. Didn't seem to phase her at all.

Each week had a theme and during the "Animals/Farms" week, Autumn got to milk a cow! I'm so glad to have these pictures. She doesn't always remember the things that she does from day to day and this is one I didn't hear about. Looks like fun though!

This is on Pajama Day. Autumn is leading her class in "Three Little Monkeys swinging on a tree...". (I think there are more kids on the left beyond the camera....there were 10 students.)

Mixing paint. Heidi looked at this and thought it was something a lot less pleasant! ;-)

Completely impractical but totally fun beach hats.

Mexican/Latino Week -- mixing dough for tortillas, which they got to eat later.

Autumn's Birthday!

Beach Week -- Autumn's surfing.

Water Day. This was her favorite part of the day - digging in the sand to make streams. Her second favorite was probably the slip-n-slide.

Dr. Autumn at your service!

Yesterday Autumn & Heidi were emptying the dishwasher. Autumn asked me if they could go back outside after they were done and I said yes. She gave me a huge hug and said, "Mom, you're the best!" I told her thankyou -- only to be told by Heidi, "It's your pleasure. That's what you say Mommy, it's your pleasure."

And then as Autumn was putting silverware away, she said, "Ow! A fork poked me." Heidi asked her, "Oh, did it hurt?" and in a "shrug" kind of tone Autumn said, "No."

We have these fish/sea animal bath toys from Oma & Opa that stick to the wall when you get them wet. Autumn and Heidi already love 'em. Looks like Esther's quick to catch on.

I didn't put these on her head, it was Heidi - really.

How'd she get to be so photogenic?

This one is my favorite. Just look at that smile!

"Mom! Look what I can do!"

Autumn "measuring up"

Heidi measuring "down"?
These were taken just outside of the Ape House.

Today I took the girls to the Hogle Zoo (sans Eric, who was teaching voice lessons). So much fun! And I was really excited to go one more time before we move. We got to see the new "Asian Highlands" exhibit that was still being built last time we went and we also got to the see WHITE ALLIGATOR.

He's on loan from the New Orleans Zoo and his name is Antoine (I think that's hilarious...). I took several pictures of him but they didn't really turn out. This one is from an article in the Deseret News (this is a great article). There has only been one recorded finding of white alligators, in 1987. There were 18 of them and now there are only 10 left. And they're NOT albino's. It's so interesting! Albino's have no pigment at all, so their eyes are pink or red. But these white alligators have pigment in their eyes, just none in their skin. They usually have blue eyes. And they have white skin because of a genetic mutation. It was really trippy seeing a white alligator. And he didn't move at all while we were looking so it was hard to believe he was real!

Who knew there were penguins in South Africa?
I sure didn't!

"Come on in, the water's fine!"

All the penguins were huddled in a corner until one branched off to test the water. They followed to watch and then hurried back to their corner after he was done. I think it was a triple dog dare.

And here we are after FIVE hours at the zoo. Can you tell Esther's ready to go home? That was actually the first time she fussed all day. She and her sisters had a great time.
